Week 4: Home
Describe the house in which you grew up. Was it big or small? What made it unique? Is it still there today?
The house I grew up in was a one story with four bedrooms. My siblings and I each had our own. The living room/dining room/kitchen was all centered in the house with two bedrooms on either side. My sister and I shared one “wing” of the house and my parents and brother the other. LOL! Although I think initially my sister was on the other side for a long time. I believe the house is still there today. I drove through the town I grew up in a couple of months ago and it seemed more run down than when I lived there so I didn’t venture outside the city limits to find out.

Week 2: Winter
What was winter like where and when you grew up? Describe not only the climate, but how the season influenced your activities, food choices, etc.
I spent most of my growing up years living in southwest Missouri where there was a lot of ice and snow each winter. I remember one Christmas Day when my mom had just finished cleaning up the kitchen after we ate Christmas lunch and the power went out. We had snow on the ground and then ice. Lots of ice. We were lucky to have a wood fire place in our living room and wood to burn because the power was out for days. I remember we even ended up cutting up and burning an old living room chair towards the end of that power outage.
We lived on 10 acres and behind and to the right of the house the land dipped down slightly and there was a huge low-lying area. When it would rain too much, it would flood. When it would snow too much, then melt, it would flood. When it would snow too much, melt, then freeze again, we could go ice skating.
Winter was always an adventure because we lived four miles out of town up a steep hill. School was closed a lot when the weather got too bad. The town just couldn’t get the roads clear enough for all the kids who lived outside of city limits. Snow days meant play days.

Amy Coffin of the We Tree blog came up with a weekly challenge to write your personal genealogy and history. I am a little behind in writing mine so over the next week I’ll get caught up.
Week 1 – New Year’s
Did your family have any New Year’s traditions? How was the New Year celebrated during your childhood? Have you kept these traditions in the present day?
As a child my parents would let us stay up to ring in the New Year. We ate pizza rolls, had soda and other treats. I remember watching the ball drop in Times Square.
In the present day I end up going to bed before midnight but wake up at midnight when the neighbors start shooting off fireworks. My husband stays up with the boys, who don’t always make it to midnight either.

If you read my post on Monday about going through old boxes of stuff this weekend, you will know I found a lot of new items I had not really looked at.
This is the cover to the Webster Dictionary. I am not sure of the date. It is a thick cardboard cover and on the back is a lot of family history information. We have all heard of families writing in the family Bible, but a dictionary?
The back contains information written by my grandma Rose Tregler. She wrote birth and death dates and places, social security numbers and citizenship petition numbers for some of my relatives! The people include Jaroslav Tregler, Sr., Jaroslav Tregler, Anna Tregler, Rose Tregler, her parent’s names, my aunt and my mom.
I wonder why grandma would write this in a dictionary……. Where are some interesting places you have located family information?
