52 Weeks of Personal Genealogy and History – Week 5

Watch for Weeks 1 to 3 to be posted over the next week as I was getting caught up.

Week 5: Favorite Food

What was your favorite food from childhood? If it was homemade, who made it? What was in this dish, and why was it your favorite? What is your favorite dish now?

I have several favorites from childhood. My mom used to make houska growing up. It is a Czech braided bread with dates and nuts. We would put a little butter on it and enjoy. Mmmmmm. Just about anything my mom made was great, except green beans. I spent many nights at the dinner table after everyone was done eating because I wouldn’t eat my beans. Ugh. I really could have done without the beans.

Since I spent most of my growing up years in southwest Missouri, I also had favorite Chicago foods which I would enjoy when we would visit. The foods I loved are Home Run Inn pizza with sausage and mushrooms, Veseky’s bakery salty horns and kolacky, and Novi’s Italian Beef sandwiches. Sadly, Veseky’s is gone. I’m not sure about Novi’s. Haven’t driven by there in a long time. Home Run Inn is about two miles from my house today and we enjoy their pizza once a month or every other month.

My favorite dishes now – pretty much everything I ate as a kid, but add dark chocolate. Almost any kind of dark chocolate dessert has been added to my list of favorites.
